a brief history of soup

It’s a concept that supposedly transplanted from Detroit where the SOUP lore has it that the project began as a monthly citywide dinner in February 2010, which has now grown into nine neighborhood dinners that meet three times a year.

In reality, Detroit didn’t invent the SOUP concept. An arts group was doing something similar on Sunday evenings in Chicago starting in 2007, but Detroit took it a step further and decided to do it for all kinds of social enterprises, not just the arts. Since then, the movement has inspired many others to follow a similar micro-funding model in their cities.
